7.Set the multiport valve to “Waste” and vacuum the settled alum to waste.

Important Notes on Using Alum

  • You must be able to vacuum to waste. Cartridge filters and slide valves typically do not support this function.
  • When vacuuming to waste, do so slowly to avoid disturbing the settled alum, which has a wet, papery consistency.
  • If you lack a multiport valve, avoid running the pump after adding alum, as it may clog the filter. Instead, brush the pool to help distribute the alum.
  • Use any type of aluminum sulfate (food grade, technical grade, or garden grade), but avoid ammonium sulfate, which is a different chemical.
  • The recommended dosage of 4 lbs per 10,000 gallons may vary based on the level of contaminants in the pool.
  • If the pool pump is on a timer, disable the “ON” function to prevent early activation that could disrupt settled alum or clog the filter.
  • If algae are present, add 2-4 lbs of shock per 10,000 gallons immediately after adding alum.
  • Alum performs best in water temperatures of 70-80°F but is also effective in colder conditions.
